F1 Charlie Whiting Dies of PE

F1 race Director, Charlie Whiting has died from a Pulmonary Embolism, a blood clot that traveled to his Lung. A shock death that happened on the eve of the Australian season opener, our thoughts are with his family and all that knew him well.

Thinking about what we know on blood clot formation in the veins, Charlie would be in an 'at-risk' category, being over 60 years and travelling long-haul to Australia.

A blood clot forms behind weak valves in the veins and can break off and travel up to the Lungs, where the clot creates a blockage, or a PE (Pulmonary Embolism).

We cannot stress how important it is to look after the health of your legs, particularly if you are in an 'at-risk' category. Compression socks will make sure that your blood flow stays healthy and helps prevent the formation of blood clots.

If you know anyone that flies regularly or is due to take a flight soon, especially long-haul, then please make sure they get protection for their legs, with a pair of compression socks or Flight socks. Remember that ill-fitting compression socks can do more harm than good, so make sure you purchase them from a specialised dealer. Do not buy using shoe size, you will need to know your ankle and calf circumference to get the correct therapy on your legs.
