Why Do Athletes Wear Compression Socks for Training/Competing?

Compression socks and leg sleeves promote a healthy blood circulation in the feet and legs, helping to oxygenate active muscles, energising the legs and helping athletes to maintain the performance required, whilst training and competing.

The graduated compression in the socks will gently squeeze the legs, so that the blood flow velocity is more effective in returning blood from the feet and legs, and back up to the Heart. This improved cycle helps the blood to carry oxygen around the body more effectively during times of intense activity, which may help lessen the accumulation of lactic acid and reduce the risk of cramps.

The ‘clinging’ nature of sports compression socks means they are good at helping to stabilise the muscles and reduce vibrations, and so can play an essential part in the prevention of sporting injuries.

It is not just for training and competing either. Athletes are also finding that by wearing compression socks or leg sleeves during their recovery times, helps avoid pains, cramps, leg fatigue and swelling post-activity. Some find it useful to wear higher compression levels (more squeeze) for higher intensity and performance, but wear lower compression garments post-workout, to facilitate quicker, muscle recovery times.

No matter what the skill level, Compression Socks can be worn by many fitness enthusiasts to help maintain a consistent and safer training programme.

(If you a suffering with or have a history of Diabetes, vascular or arterial disease, or Heart problems, please always check with your doctor first before using compression garments.)
